Rethinking impact in academic publishing #STMWeek 2019
Read more: Rethinking impact in academic publishing #STMWeek 2019In this blog, I share four ways in which publishers were challenged in rethinking the impact of academic publishing. ‘Impact’ has become a buzzword in academia. It is key to the UK Research Excellence Framework and it’s regarded as a key metric of success for research. For the publishing world, ‘impact’ is an equally important and frequently used word. Yet, most often, it is reduced to metrics and data. In December I had the opportunity to engage in a meaningful discussion about impact with publishers around the world at #STMWeek 2019. Three reasons why presenting research in theatre is powerful
Read more: Three reasons why presenting research in theatre is powerfulIn this blog post, we share three reasons why presenting research in theatre is powerful. The inspiration for this blog came from watching the play ‘SHE’ at stage@leeds at the University of Leeds. The play depicted the lives of several women inventors and their struggles as they fought for their rights and equality. It left a lasting effect on our team and we enjoyed learning about women engineers in this format. This got us thinking about why theatre is a powerful research dissemination method. About the play Engineering has been and still is a profession largely dominated by men. To counterbalance this…

Organising our first meetup
Read more: Organising our first meetupIn this blog post, we share our experience of organising our first meetup on communicating research. Although this was the first time we organised an event like this, based on the feedback we received from the participants, it was very successful. Here we cover three aspects that we feel contributed to the success of the event on the night. We hope these can help you if you’re thinking of organising something similar. Why organise a meetup? A meetup is an informal meeting or gathering. I was first introduced to the concept of meetup a few years ago. I remember…

Workshop at the Leeds Social Sciences Institute
Read more: Workshop at the Leeds Social Sciences InstituteThis month I delivered an interactive workshop at the Leeds Social Sciences Institute (LSSI). To make this workshop happen, we collaborated with Katie Barclay, LSSI Communications and Events Coordinator. This was our flagship workshop on ‘Communicating research beyond academia’. The workshop offered researchers a step-by-step framework for creating a 2-page visual summary to showcase expertise to non-academics. In this post, I share insights from the workshop at the Leeds Social Sciences Institute and a few lessons I took away. This workshop followed a similar structure to the interactive workshop on communicating research delivered at the University of Sheffield. Collaborating with the…

The importance of failure for researchers
Read more: The importance of failure for researchersIn this post, we share three tips on the importance of failure for researchers. We’ll also touch on how failure can be turned into future successes for you and your work. These tips are inspired by the ‘Power of Failure’ event held by NEXUS and Bettakultcha (17 Oct 2019) in Leeds. Over 100 people came to the event to network and hear five speakers share personal and business stories. Among them was our director, Mihaela Gruia, who spoke about failure early in her entrepreneurial journey. The ‘Power of Failure’ event at Nexus Leeds Nexus is a Leeds-based innovation hub. It…

We will break down the key components of the canvas and how the tool can be used for research projects. This blog is inspired by the Branswer workshop (09 Oct 2019) on crafting content for customers at Avenue HQ in Leeds. In true Research Retold style, after the event, we reflected on how what we learned can help researchers communicate more effectively with stakeholders. The Branswer event on crafting content for customers in Leeds The event was hosted…
